SVMC's Inaugural Unitek College Cohort Marks One-Year Milestone, Progresses into Nursing Core Curriculum

Sierra View Medical Center (SVMC) proudly announces the one-year milestone of its pioneering partnership with Unitek College, as the inaugural cohort of 15 employees progresses into the nursing core curriculum of the Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) program.

From the outset, SVMC and Unitek College embarked on a groundbreaking collaboration in late 2022, aiming to address the critical nursing shortages. Dr. Jeffery Hudson-Covolo, Vice President of Patient Care Services and Chief Nurse Executive at Sierra View Medical Center, expressed his enthusiasm, stating, "This opportunity supports our very own strategic goal of creating a pipeline of professional nurses to join the workforce in this time of severe shortages in Tulare County and the region." Today, as the first cohort heads into the next phase of their academic journey, he is excited for the group to move onto hands-on and skills based learning.

The inaugural cohort, composed of SVMC employees, has completed a demanding first year encompassing general education courses and virtual practice and foundational medical training all while finding a work-life balance. Now, as they transition into the nursing core curriculum, these individuals will undergo comprehensive hands-on training, including skills labs and clinical simulations mirroring real-world healthcare environments.

The nursing core curriculum delves into critical aspects of nursing practice, covering topics such as nursing as a caring science, adult health human caring nursing, maternal/newborn family caring nursing, pediatric human caring nursing, transition to practice, and more.

Through the ongoing partnership with Unitek Learning, SVMC employees and others have the opportunity to pursue a career in nursing through the BSN program, ultimately contributing to efforts to alleviate nursing shortages and enhance healthcare delivery in the region.
