Josh Martinez’s Path Toward His Dream Career

An internship with a local organization is all it took for Josh Martinez to set his career path in motion. As a high school student at Monache High School, Josh benefited from the foundational career instruction he received from Porterville Unified School District (PUSD) Pathways teachers. Just six months after graduating high school, he was already employed in his focus area of choice: Information Technology (IT). After three years working at Eagle Mountain Casino’s IT, Josh returned to the local organization where he first interned as a high school student. That organization is none other than Sierra View Medical Center. Josh first received work experience here through an opportunity made available due to the partnership Sierra View has developed with the PUSD Pathways program. “I was fortunate enough to do the MTA Pathway with a focus on information technology where I was able to meet my current team,” says Josh. Josh now works as a System Engineer at Sierra View’s Information Technology department.

Recently, Josh shared his experiencing receiving the career tools he needed at a PUSD Pathways Mixer while helping to celebrate the opening of PUSD’s Garner Holt Animakerspace Lab. “If it wasn’t for that internship and this pathway, I wouldn’t be where I’m at today,” says Josh.

Helping to develop local talent in areas such as information technology in an area with less opportunity in a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) fields is a priority for Sierra View Medical Center. “A community of dedicated partners, like SVMC, can make a world of difference to empower our future leaders,” says PUSD Director of Student Pathways Cynthia G. Brown.
