Our Graduate Medical Education (GME) Internal Medicine Residency Program opened the Academic Health Center (AHC) in 2021. The AHC serves as a Continuity Outpatient Clinic, where our residents have their own ‘practice’ by continuously seeing patients over three years. Residents rotate through the center to gain experience as primary care physicians. At the AHC, residents are overseen by the GME Internal Medicine Residency Program Director, Paul Watanakunakorn, MD, and other faculty. The AHC functions similarly to other physician offices and outpatient clinics. GME Residents are available to see patients who do not have a primary care physician and need to establish with one. Patients who are established with a primary care physician can also be seen for timely hospital follow-ups if their provider does not have a soon enough appointment. Patients would be seen by a GME resident for the follow-up appointment and then referred back to their provider for further care.
Services at the AHC are for patients 14 years and older. To be seen by a GME resident at the AHC, community members make appointments with an AHC medical assistant over the phone.
