Application Requirements

The Sierra View Medical Center Internal Medicine Residency operates under the standard academic calendar year from July-June.

We participate in the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP), and interested candidates must apply online through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS). All complete applications are reviewed on an individual basis. An application is considered complete when the following information has been received:

  • Dean’s Letter
  • Medical School Transcript
  • Curriculum Vitae
  • Written Personal Statement
  • Three letters of recommendation (at least two of these should be from members of the Department of Internal Medicine at your school, affiliate, hospital or elective course, and current within the last 12 months)
  • United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE) Scores Step I and Step II (CS and CK)* or COMLEX Scores Step I and Step II
  • Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) Certification (if applicable)

Selection and Appointment

The Sierra View Medical Center Internal Medicine Residency Selection Committee reviews applications for twelve (12) categorical PGY 1 positions and four (4) preliminary PGY 1 positions each year. We select the most qualified candidates to interview and rank based on the following criteria:

  • Graduated from a U.S. or Foreign Medical School ideally within the last three (3) years.
  • USMLE Steps I and II (CS and CK)* Passage (Scores above 220 preferred). If FMG, highly favored if Part III passed as well. Ideally no failures at any level.
  • J-1 visa sponsorship considered on a case-by-case basis.
  • H1B Visas are not sponsored.

Match Process

You must register for the Match (NRMP), as we do not accept any applicants outside of the Match.

*Note: Due to the current suspension of administration of the USMLE Step II CS exam and prior cancellations of the USMLE Step II CK exam, we recognize that some applicants may not have these examinations completed. We will review applications that do not yet have these completed with the understanding that the Step II CK exam must be completed and passed prior to the start of residency training. U.S. medical graduates will not be required to have a USMLE Step II CS exam completion and passage for now. Foreign medical graduates seeking ECFMG certification should refer to the ECFMG website regarding pathways to ECFMG Certification in absence of a USMLE Step II CS exam score.
